What is unique about Lal Murgh Ka Saalan

The name ‘Lal Murgh ka Saalan’ literally translates to Red chicken Curry as this spicy yet flavoursome gravy is typically cooked using dried red chillies, tomato sauce, tomato puree as the main ingredient along with Murgh or chicken.

Ingredient for Lal Murgh ka Saalan

 

Chicken – 500 gms with bone

Onion – 1 medium

Turmeric- 1/2 teaspoon

Oil – 5 tablespoons A

Dry red chilies – 12-15

Ginger garlic paste— 3 tablespoon

Tomato Sauce 1 -2 tablespoon

Tomato Puree – 4-5 tablespoon

Garam Masala Powder -1/2 tablespoon

Salt to taste

 

 

Method

In a small bowl take the red chillies and add just enough water so as to fully immerse the red chillies in it

Leave to soak for 10-15 minutes
Transfer the chillies along with the water into a small mixer jar and grind them to a fine paste by adding a pinch of salt

I a heavy bottomed pan a heat the oil and sauté the onions till they turn translucent

At this point add in the turmeric, ginger garlic paste, tomato pure, tomato sauce, salt and the ground red chilli paste and give the ingredients a good mix for 2-3 minutes

Add the chicken pieces next and mix them well with the rest of the gravy

As the chicken pieces start to cook and change colour add about 1/4 th cup of water, give the gravy a good stir and leave it to simmer on low flame for 20/25 minutes making sure to stir the gravy occasionally

Add gram masala powder, let water dry and oil to seperate on low flame

When you see the water dry out and the chicken fully cooked turn off the flame

Serve the Lal Murgh by springing in some lemon juice and garnishing the gravy with fresh coriander

The Lal Murgh ka saalan can be served with flavoured rice yellow or naan

If you feel its very spicy, you can also add 1/4 cup cream (optional)
